Philly Cheesesteak Stromboli

ClaraBy ClaraJune 12, 2025Updated:July 19, 202503 Mins Read

Philly Cheesesteak Stromboli filled with sliced beef, peppers, onions, and melted cheese, wrapped in golden dough.

Philly Cheesesteak Stromboli takes everything you love about the iconic sandwich and wraps it in golden, flaky pizza dough. It’s a hearty, cheesy, and savory twist on a classic, perfect for game nights, family dinners, or whenever you’re craving something bold and satisfying. With juicy steak, melted cheese, and seasoned veggies, every slice is a flavor-packed bite of comfort.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb thinly sliced beef (ribeye or sirloin)
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 green bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 1 red bell pepper, thinly sliced (optional)
  • Salt & pepper to taste
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • 1 can refrigerated pizza dough (or 1 lb fresh pizza dough)
  • 1½ cups shredded provolone or mozzarella cheese
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)
  • Optional: ½ tsp dried oregano or parsley (for garnish)

Preparation

Step 1: In a skillet over medium-high heat, heat the olive oil. Add the sliced onion and peppers. Sauté for 5–7 minutes until softened. Remove and set aside.

Step 2: In the same skillet, cook the beef until browned and just cooked through. Season with garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.

Step 3: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Roll out the pizza dough into a rectangle (about 10×14 inches) on a lightly floured surface.

Step 4: Layer the beef evenly down the center of the dough, followed by the sautéed onions and peppers. Sprinkle the shredded cheese generously over the top.

Step 5: Fold the long edges of the dough over the filling, then fold in the short ends. Pinch to seal and place seam-side down on a parchment-lined baking sheet.

Step 6: Brush the top with beaten egg. Sprinkle with dried herbs if desired.

Step 7: Bake for 20–25 minutes or until the dough is golden brown and cooked through. Let cool for 5 minutes before slicing.

Variation

  • Mushroom Lover’s Version: Add sautéed mushrooms for a richer bite.
  • Cheesier Twist: Mix provolone with pepper jack or American cheese.
  • Spicy Kick: Add banana peppers or jalapeños.

COOKING Note

For a crispier crust, bake directly on a pizza stone or preheated baking steel.

Serving Suggestions

Slice and serve with marinara sauce for dipping. Pair with a crisp salad or fries.

Tips

  • Don’t overfill the dough to avoid leaking.
  • Let the filling cool slightly before rolling to prevent sogginess.
  • Use pre-sliced steak for faster prep.
